I am informed that a large gathering of Eritreans to elect a UK-wide Executive Council of Eritreans representing the Yiakil (Enough is Enough) Movement is planned for March 22 in London, as well as in other major cities in Europe and North America.
However, in view of the new realities surrounding the highly infectious coronavirus disease, I am of the strong opinion that this should not take place. Although the date might have been set much earlier, with coronavirus now spreading like wildfire, common sense and the hard reality of this disease seem to suggest that the gathering should not go ahead as planned.
In other words, in the interests of the safety of our people, such gatherings should be cancelled without delay. This is because such a large meeting could have unintended consequences: i.e. it could be the venue for the transmission of this killer disease among the most active members of Eritrean society, those who are engaged in the struggle for justice and democracy in Eritrea.
