Is the Eritrean tyrant Dead or Alive?

At present there is wild speculation circulating in the online media about the health of President Issayas Afeworki of Eritrea. Some websites have even boldly asserted that the President of Eritrea is indeed dead at a hospital in Germany to which he was admitted last month (October) for treatment. It has also been claimed that his corpse has been despatched to Eritrea for burial.

It is also being claimed that the news of the death of the President is being kept secret and that the affairs of Eritrea are being run by a Derg-type committee until a solid arrangement can be made for the smooth transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Consequently, it is thus essential to ask the following appropriate question at this point: is the President of Eritrea dead or alive? If he is alive, why did he not attend the India-Africa Forum in New Delhi, India from 26–30 October 2015?

Another recent report claims that the Eritrean President received a high level delegation of the People’s Republic of China, led by Mr. Liu Jie, Vice-Governor of Sichuan Provincial People’s Government on November 6 last week. The Er-TV report, however, failed to show live coverage of the meeting of the President with the Chinese delegation and the signing ceremony on November 6, 2015 of the purchase agreement executed to sell Sunridge Gold’s 60% interest to Sichuan Road and Bridge Mining Investment Development Corp for US$65M.

Mdre Bahri strongly believes that the Eritrean people have the right to know where the Eritrean President is. It is thus high time now for the Eritrean authorities to tell the Eritrean population the whereabouts of the President.

In the meantime, at this trying moment, the Eritrean people must strengthen their unity and remain vigilant.
