Drs. Tsegezab Gebregergis
It is now 10 years since the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1907, adopted on December 23 2009, against the fascist government of Eritrea, led by Issayas Afeworki, for allegedly supporting an extremist Islamist group, known as Al-Shebab, in Somalia.
The sanctions included an arms embargo, asset freezes and a travel ban and they were imposed at the behest of the TPLF/EPRDF government of Ethiopia, led by the then Prime Minister, Meles Zenawi.
Ironically, these sanctions, which were imposed against Eritrea as a result of the demands of Ethiopia, were annulled according to the demands of the present Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, without giving any explanation to the Eritrean and Ethiopian public as to why the sanctions were imposed against Eritrea in the first place and why they have to be annulled now when the destructive nature of the dictatorial Eritrean regime has not changed even slightly.
On the contrary, these sanctions have been repealed at a time when the Eritrean people are languishing in the Eritrean Gulag, including thousands of innocent Eritrean children.
Recently, it was disclosed on social media that a young Eritrean teenager, Ciham Ali Ahmed, who had been detained by the criminal Eritrean regime and suffering in one of the country’s many underground prisons, was found dead in her cell. Ciham had been suffering there since December 2012. She is the daughter of the former Eritrean Information Minister, Ali Ahmed, who now lives in exile in Australia.
It is therefore a great shame for the international community to tolerate such an inhuman and barbaric fascist government and to watch silently while the regime is busy throwing innocent Eritreans into dark and overcrowded dungeons and letting them suffer and die there in agony.
Therefore, on the eve of Christmas, Mdrebahri.com is calling on the UN to impose fresh and all-encompassing sanctions against this heartless Eritrean regime until it unconditionally releases all political prisoners and surrenders power to the Eritrean people.
The Eritrean people need peace and dignity now!
