A Short Editorial Comment –The Man and His Wild Political Ambitions!!
Issaias Afeworki is now about 69 years old. Ever since he split from the mother organisation (the Eritrean Liberation Front) in 1971 and set up his own organisation, the Popular Liberation Front (PLF), renamed later the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF), he has been at the centre of power unchallenged and without interruption for more than 55 years.
He enjoys being at the centre of power so much so that he can never imagine any other life and his wild political ambition knows no limits. Indeed, he is really a sadist who enjoys the sufferings of his former close comrades imprisoned in dark underground dungeons.
For the last 40 years or so, Issaias Afeworki has been acting as brutally and cruelly as Joseph Stalin did in Soviet Russia in order to remain at the centre of power. He did anything and everything in order to keep at bay all his actual and potential enemies and rivals for power. In fact, in order to silence and humiliate his political opponents, Issaias Afeworki would send some into forced exile confine others to house arrest, jail some more for an indefinite period and assassinate still more.
Issaias Afeworki’s rule is thus characterised by colossal cruelties and systematic human-rights abuses, stifling freedom of speech, imposing forced labour and imprisonment, torturing Eritrean political prisoners and keeping an estimated 10,000 under humiliating and degrading conditions.
Issaias Afeworki has open Contempt for the Eritrean People
On many occasions Issaias Afeworki has displayed open contempt for the Eritrean people’s aspiration to live under democracy. He has stated that there will not be elections/democracy in Eritrea in the next 30-40 years and suggested to those who wish to live under democracy that they travel to another planet.
Indeed, Issaias Afeworki is so arrogant, with utter contempt for Eritrea and its people, that he has been running the country without a constitution as if it were his family company, systematically milking and impoverishing the Eritrean people and slowly but surely destroying the fabric of Eritrean society. Out of pure contempt, he is also determined to remain President of Eritrea for life.
The Eritrean youth, the cream and hope of Eritrean society, are being systematically driven away into exile in their thousands. Thus, all the signals one observes in Eritrea under Issaias’s PFDJ rule today are those of a decaying society in the process of total disintegration.
As should be clear to every Eritrean by now, Issaias Afeworki, his PFDJ party and all the little Issaiases around him are not pursuing an Eritrean agenda. In any case, they never had a national agenda. Right from the start, they had their own hidden political agenda – one diametrically opposed to Eritrea’s national interest.
In fact, this agenda is to dismantle Eritrea as a political entity. That is why, right from the outset, Issaias Afeworki and his clique have been secretly busy imprisoning and killing all those patriotic Eritreans who could have defended and promoted the Eritrean national interest. The imprisonment for almost 30 years of the Eritrean nationalist, Bitweded Abraha, is a case in point here.
Because we have waited with folded arms for far too long, sadly the Eritrean people are now being faced with a hard choice: either they instigate a people’s uprising and destroy the tyrant or the tyrant will destroy Eritrea. There is no other choice left for Eritrea and its people.
